Senior Chief Jim Griffin,
naval science instructor for
Northmont
High School
’s NJROTC program, is walking with a new
spring in his step following the unit’s
recent trip to
Pensacola
,
Florida
.
Northmont’s NJROTC
unit, led by senior naval science instructor
Lt Col Ken Knotts, spent April 15-19 on the
Gulf Coast to compete in Navy Nationals,
NJROTC’s national championship. The Navy
Nationals competition pitted the 25 top Naval
JROTC units against each other in athletics,
academics, and drill events. Northmont placed
14th in the nation, tying for 5th
in Unit Personnel Inspection and taking top
tens in Color Guard and Unarmed Platoon Basic
Drill. This top-15 showing places Northmont in
the top 2% of NJROTC units in the nation and
continues the recently named Distinguished
Unit’s tradition of competing at the highest
level.
Concluding the two-day
event was the knockout competition. Over a
thousand cadets poured onto the drill deck,
and when it was over, five of the top ten
cadets left standing in the unarmed knockout
competition were Northmont cadets Aaron
Newsom, Logan O’Shea, Thomas Patterson, Evan
Fleming, and Rasheen Ware.Additionally, individual armed
knock-out medals were awarded to cadets Ramsey
Crow and Lucas Hanson. Cadet Melanie Collins
placed eleventh in curl-ups out of 200 female
competitors.
Every year the
competition gets tougher and every team is
better prepared than they were the year
before. The top teams come back to
Pensacola
every year, stronger, faster, sharper than
ever.
Northmont has been to
Navy Nationals for five of the last six
competitions, and one reason Senior Chief
Griffin has a spring in his step is that of
this year’s thirty-eight competing cadets,
thirty-three cadets are returning to the unit
next year. This is good news because it means
the Northmont unit will be able to bring a
seasoned team to
Pensacola
next April if they qualify for the national
championships.
This year’s team has
become increasingly united as they have worked
toward their goal of making Northmont a real
presence at Navy Nationals. “None of this
could have been possible without the superior
leadership of commanding officer Taylor
Corcoran” and her senior staff: Drew
Chestnut, Brittany Long, Thomas Patterson, and
Nikki Tucker, noted Senior Chief Griffin.

Michigan
,
Indiana
,
Illinois
, and
West Virginia
to win the Area 3 East regional championship

Grove City

Academics, commanded by Thomas Patterson, and
Color Guard, commanded by Melinda Ashley.
Their second place awards in Armed Individual
Drill Regulation, Athletics, Armed Exhibition,
and Unarmed Exhibition, and a third place in

rivals Central Crossing and Hamilton high
schools.
In
addition to team awards, Northmont dominated
individual awards. Academics medals went to
Thomas Patterson (1st), Evan
Fleming (2nd), and Barrett Lowry

Florida
, April 17-18, 2009. In order to help the team
finance the trip to Nationals, they have
scheduled fundraisers at Englewood Do It Best
on Sunday, April 5, and LaRosa’s on
Thursday, April 9.

Annual Military Ball Saturday, 21 February
This
year's military ball is
Hollywood
themed and is titled Night Under the
Stars. The cadets worked hard on
preparations for the big night and it showed. Both the guests on the cadets raved
about the decorations. The male cadets
looked sharp in their service
dress uniform and their dates were
equally well dressed in their formal gowns. An addition this year was the white
table set for POW’s and MIA.Cadet Chestnut read an explanation of
the table while everyone stood in respect.
Our
special guest this year is the Command
Master Chief of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary
Force out of
Camp Lejeune
,
North Carolina
, CMDCM (FMF / SW / AW) James Piner. He
spoke to the group in words that really hit
home. Said one cadet, “We could relate to
what he was saying, not only for our immediate
goals but also for our long term goals.”
We
would like to thank Red-Hot-and-Rolling (DJ),
Kohler Catering and all of the parents who
worked tirelessly to help make this the best
Military Ball ever!
Chicagoland
Drill Meet Trip
In
three months, the Navy Junior ROTC unit of
Northmont
High School
has visited both Marine Corp boot-camp
graduation at
Parris Island
,
South Carolina
, and the Navy boot-camp graduation at Great
Lakes,
Illinois
.Both
have resulted in lessons on local history of
the areas as well as some life lessons on
leadership. The trip to Navy boot-camp on February
6 and 7 was combined with visits to the
Miracle Mile in downtown
Chicago
, dinner at Gino’s East Chicago-style
pizzeria and a drill meet at
Wheeling
High School
in one of
Chicago
’s northwestern suburbs involving 18 schools
from
Michigan
,
Indiana
,
Ohio
, and
Illinois
.
The cadets spent
most of Friday observing the ceremonial
pageantry of Navy boot camp graduation,
followed by tours of the boot-camp ships (self
contained training centers with barracks, chow
hall and classrooms, and enabling training to
continue no matter what the weather is like
outside), the in-processing center where the
cadets saw not only the many facets of turning
a civilian into a sailor but also seen the
history of sailors from the past 200 plus
years.The
cadets were also impressed with the aquatic
center, where the recruits go through rigorous
training and certification in water survival.
When our tours were done, we spent
several hours of practice for the next days
drill meet before we headed south to downtown
Chicago
.Although
time did not afford us the opportunity to tour
all of the sights of downtown Chi-town, the
cadets did get to enjoy some real
Chicago-style pizza. The pies were so thick and tasty, they
were still talking about them on Saturday’s
ride home.
Saturday started with a 0430 wake up
call, for what would be an exhausting day of
drill events. The 41 cadets competed against a
caliber of teams unlike any they’ve faced in
prior drill meets, and due to the outstanding
leadership of the team commanders, the unit
rose to the occasion. Their hard work and
dedication resulted in a second-place overall
finish.
Before
the trophies were awarded, 500-plus cadets
locked horns in armed and unarmed knockout.
Four Northmont cadets earned top 10 medals,
including Cadet Hurd, who took first place in
unarmed knockout. Finally, it was time to hand out the
trophies for all the events. We earned first
in armed basic drill, second in unarmed basic
drill, armed exhibition, and academics; we
also earned fourth place in color guard and
fifth in inspection., resulting in a second
place overall finish.
We
would like to thank the parents of the cadets
who made this trip possible.

Captain
Noce (pronounced Nocha), the Professor of Naval Science from THE
Ohio State University, along with Senior Enlisted
Instructor GySgt
Santoro, were the Inspecting
Officers for what was an outstanding showing
by all of the cadets. Also in attendance
were Northmont's Superintendent, Mr. Doug
Lantz, and the High School Principal, George
Caras. After a one-hour personnel
inspection, the Unit reassembled into the
ceremony phase. During this the 3rd
Platoon and the Unarmed Exhibition team
performed, giving our Inspecting Officers a
chance to see results of the teams' hard
work. Also, 25 cadets received the Exemplary
Personnel Appearance award for standing out as
the best in their Platoons. LtCol Knotts and
Senior Chief Griffin are very proud of the
cadets' efforts and the attention to detail by
the Senior Staff, resulting in the outstanding
scores on this year's Annual Military
Inspection.
South Carolina
Orientation Trip
"The coldest fun I've
ever had!"
NJROTC completed a trip to Charleston
and Parris Island, South Carolina, for an orientation visit with 49 cadets
and 2 chaperons (plus LtCol knots
and Senior Chief Griffin). What, you ask, is an orientation visit? It is a trip that introduces the cadets
to what the real Navy and/or Marine Corp life
is about. We stayed aboard the USS
Yorktown, a decommissioned carrier that is
now used as a museum for not only general
public visits but also used for Scouting
groups and JROTC groups as leadership camps and learn about the culture and history of
Charleston. We also stayed at Parris Island, observing
Marine boot-camp graduation and
visited the Marine Corp Air Station. To get to South Carolina we used commercial bus
racking up over 1500 miles in 5 days.

Northmont NJROTC in the community
Northmont’s NJROTC is involved in several community service projects.
Our Senior Staff were the guest of honors at the Northmont Rotary Club's Luncheon on Tuesday, Aug 26th. Cadets Easton, Baylis, Chestnut and Long presented the National Colors and Commanding Officer Taylor Corcoran provided a brief on what Northmont's NJROTC is all about. Picture taking responsibility went to Cadet Dillon. This was followed by a spirited Q&A session that left the kids
feeling very positive about their roll in the Northmont community.
Our Color Guard has not only
performed in the home Varsity Football games
at Good Samaritan stadium, they
have also participated in the Homearama
Opening Ceremonies in Union, the Tri-County
North football game, and the Northmont's Band Premiereat Good Samaritan stadium.
You can see your son / daughter perform their Color Guard skills at
every home Friday night football game this fall.
Goodwill Stores Drive To
Victory is our next community
project. Cadets and parents are
encouraged to drop off your gently used
clothing and household items at the high
schools ROTC room the week of 6 October.
The clothing will go to the needy in the Miami
Valley and the winning school will receive a
$500 scholarship from National City
Bank. Follow the link below for more
information: WHIOTV.com
We also have an event coming
up at the Spring Hill Assisted Living on
November 11th. It is a Veterans
Ceremony combined with a packing party for
Operation Show Our Love. The
residents and the cadets work together to packing and sending much needed items to our
Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen in harms way.
